Acidity & pH
Yes!!! Vaginas Should Be Acidic!!
Certain Lactobacillus species play a crucial role in creating a healthy vaginal environment. Lactic acid-producing Lactobacillus, such as Lactobacillus crispatus, are a relatively small percentage of the vaginal microbiome but are critical for maintaining acidity. These species
produce lactic acid, which lowers the pH to create a protective acidic environment. This acidity is essential for suppressing harmful microbes, including those that can cause infections, and supporting the growth of beneficial bacteria.
Other Lactobacillus species, such as Lactobacillus jensenii, produce hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful antimicrobial compound that helps eliminate pathogens, particularly those causing excessive discharge, itching, and foul odors. While hydrogen peroxide does not directly contribute to the acidity of the vaginal environment, its antimicrobial action complements the protective role of lactic acid, working together to maintain vaginal health.

Factors That Disrupt Vaginal pH
The vaginal environment is sensitive and its optimal pH balance of 3.7 – 4.5 can be disrupted by various internal and external factors. When pH is altered, the natural balance of Lactobacillus is compromised, allowing harmful microbes to thrive. Typically, 8–72 hours are required for Lactobacillus to restore the mildly acidic environment, but the process may take longer if disruptions are frequent or severe, or if Lactobacillus counts are depleted due to antibiotic use or immune suppression.
Menstrual blood is alkaline and can dilute vaginal acidity, making it easier for harmful bacteria to grow during menstruation. Recovery time after a period may vary, but Lactobacillus can typically restore balance within 24–72 hours after menstruation ends.
Semen is highly alkaline, which temporarily neutralises the acidic vaginal pH. Frequent unprotected sex can disrupt this balance, but using condoms reduces the impact. Recovery may take 24–48 hours, depending on the frequency of exposure and the individual’s microbiome.
Many commercial lubricants have an alkaline pH, which can disturb vaginal acidity and microbial balance. Choosing pH-balanced, water-based lubricants can help maintain vaginal health. Recovery from disruption typically occurs within 1–2 days if Lactobacillus levels are robust.
Antibiotics indiscriminately kill both harmful bacteria and beneficial Lactobacillus, leaving the vagina vulnerable to infections like bacterial vaginosis or yeast infections. Recovery can take several days to weeks, depending on the individual’s microbiome resilience and dietary support for beneficial bacteria.
Douching or using perfumed soaps strips the vagina of its natural bacteria, disrupting pH balance. Recovery from these disruptions may take several days if left to the body’s natural processes.
Don’t let pH disruptions affect your comfort. Real Good Honey helps restore balance naturally.
How Real Good Honey Supports Vaginal Health
Real Good Honey provides a natural and effective way to help regulate and maintain vaginal pH, closely mimicking the actions of the beneficial bacteria Lactobacillus crispatus (lactic acid producing) and Lactobacillus jensenii (hydrogen peroxide producing).
Lactobacillus crispatus produces lactic acid to lower the vaginal pH to an optimal range of 3.8–4.5, creating an environment that discourages harmful microbes from thriving. Real Good Honey has a naturally low pH (~3.9) that helps restore and maintain this mildly acidic environment, supporting the natural balance of beneficial bacteria while protecting against infections.
Lactobacillus jensenii produces hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), a powerful antimicrobial compound that neutralises harmful bacteria and yeast, preventing infections like bacterial vaginosis and thrush. Real Good Honey contains enzymes that generate hydrogen peroxide when activated by moisture. This antimicrobial action combats harmful bacteria and yeast that cause excessive discharge, itching, and foul odours, complementing the acidic environment it helps maintain.
By combining these properties, Real Good Honey supports vaginal health in a way that aligns with the natural mechanisms of beneficial Lactobacillus species.

How To Apply Real Good Honey
Using the applicator provided, plunge 8ml of Blackbutt TA35+ into the vagina, insert a honey plug and elevate the hips. Expel the honey after 45 minutes – completing this step in the shower is recommended. Repeat daily for 2-3 days, or until symptoms have resolved. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult your GP.
